🍁Hair care in autumn and winter❄️

We are in a time of transition - summer is behind us and autumn is signaling that it is here and plans to stay. We are dedicating September to hair this time, and Helen Heinroos is helping us with this.

Helen is an extremely inspiring, talented, friendly and determined woman who makes waves not only in Estonia, but also abroad. In addition, this award-winning hair magician has also set up his salon Helen Heinroos Hair Ilustuudio, which is located on the border of Kalamaja. It's definitely worth a visit!

What must be done differently in autumn and winter hair care?

Everything always depends on the hair type and it is worth listening to both your hair and the hairdresser. In the summer, you definitely need more sun protection, but when the seasons change, your hair needs more hydration and stimulation. I definitely recommend making a mask and using a balm. It is also recommended to use leave-in conditioners, masks and oils, depending on what suits your hair.

One thing you should definitely not do is go outside with wet hair. We are used to being able to go outside in the summer and our hair dries out anyway. However, if you go out in winter with wet hair (for example, after exercise), frost will form in your hair, which will damage your hair and cause it to tangle.

Unfortunately, this often ends with the hair being cut off.

Let your hair dry first or use a hair dryer. Be sure to use heat protection when using a hair dryer. In autumn and winter, be sure to keep your hair under a coat or a hat, because both snow and humidity can cause frost in your hair.

How many times a week should you wash your hair?

Hair should be washed according to need and scalp type. If you have thin hair, it gets dirty faster and you wash your hair either every day or every other day. By using dry shampoo, this gap can be extended. In the case of dry, thick and curly hair, it may happen that you only need to wash it once or twice a week. Shampoo is for washing the scalp, so the shampoo should be chosen according to the type and problems of the scalp.

When we wash our scalp clean, our skin immediately starts to produce oil again, so that there is natural hydration, the more you wash, the more oil your scalp actually produces.

Of course, you can train the cheese so that you have to wash it less often, but you have to save time and patience for that. Be sure to stretch with the babies as long as possible, there is no need to put this shampoo on their head right away.

Does frequent hair washing damage your hair?

I wouldn't say that frequent washing damages the hair, it's more important how you comb. The hair must be handled gently, it must not be torn. Make your hair more silky with care products (mask or conditioner) and the brush will go through much easier. In addition, combing the hair should be started from the ends, not higher.

Of course, overfeeding the hair is also one of the reasons why the hair can become oily faster.

At what temperature should the hair be washed and rinsed?

Warmer water opens the hair pores and colder closes them. If you want the color to wear off, use warmer water, but if you want to keep the color, then the opposite. Everyone has to feel for themselves - start with a warmer one and rinse with a cooler one, for example. You should not wash your hair with very hot or very cold water.

Wash your hair twice in a row?

I like to wash my head twice in the shower, especially if I have styling products in my hair. The first time you wash off more dirt and the second time you get all the dirt out of your hair. If the cheese is cleaner, one time is enough.

What are the biggest hair care mistakes people make?

One of the biggest mistakes is combing, combing too hard and starting from the hair root. You have to start combing your hair directly and not comb very wet hair. One of the common mistakes is, of course, not using heat protection before heat treatment. A very big mistake that is still made is to curl or straighten wet hair. The cheese must be 100% dry before these activities. You don't put your hand against a hot iron, just like you don't put a hot straightener on wet hair.

Too high temperatures are also used for the hair, for example, the maximum temperature for twisting curls should be 180 degrees. If the cheese is thin and blond, this temperature could be even lower, for example 140 degrees. Also, don't keep the curling iron in your hair for too long, otherwise the opposite reaction will occur, 30 seconds is enough.

I would definitely mention once again that one frequent mistake is going outside with wet hair in cool weather.

And of course, people often dye their heads black at home, for example, and the next day they call the hairdresser to tell me that I want to go blonde now. There is no point in doing this, it damages the hair a lot.

Of course, do not use shampoo and conditioner together and do not overdosing them. The product should be spread throughout the hair, and you can always add more if you run out. That logic doesn't work here, that the more the merrier.

In addition, it is not recommended to go to the sauna with a wet head, put a towel on your head. After all, it is 16-100 degrees in the sauna and the hair has a boiling effect. Make good use of this time, put the mask in your hair and a towel on your head, the mask works better with heat anyway. The longer the mask is on the head, the better.

Should you use conditioner and how often?

The conditioner should be used after every hair wash. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions on how long the conditioner should stay in the hair.

If you use a conditioner, you don't have to put the mask on. If you want to make a mask, do not use conditioner this time.

Should you use a mask and how often?

It depends on the hair type, it is not worth doing a mask after every head wash, because then you will overfeed the hair. Such an average could be after every fifth head wash.

If the cheese is unprocessed and completely healthy, there is no need to make a mask. If you are not sure, be sure to consult your hairdresser.

How to understand that it is excessive care of the hair?

The first sign is that the cheese becomes greasy quickly or is even greasy after washing.

How to choose a shampoo?

We choose the shampoo according to the scalp, if the scalp is oily then the shampoo should be chosen for oily hair. Same thing with dandruff or dry scalp.

You choose the conditioner or oil that can be left in the hair according to the ends.

You can even have two shampoos, one lighter and the other deeply moisturizing, so you avoid overfeeding. You can freely change shampoos, you don't have to wash with the same one forever. If it's dandruff or another major problem, you have to follow the instructions exactly and you can also use a scalp serum.

What should be observed when using a scrunchy?

In the case of braid rubber, you have to make sure that the rubber band does not sag. Silk and soft hair bands are best for hair. The most important thing is to untangle the hair so as not to mechanically injure it.

Should you rather dye your hair with clean or oily hair?

It is so and so, if you color over the head (especially when bleaching) and then it is good if the skin is protected and the color does not sting. The cheese should not be completely greasy and full of styling products.

If it is a specific job, you need, for example, clean and flying cheese. Consult your hairdresser first.

What is the biggest myth in hair care?

Myth - cutting your hair makes your hair grow faster.

It all depends on how fast your hair grows and how broken the ends are. Broken hair will break and your hair will become shorter. It is wise to cut off the broken hair.

It also depends on the hair type, if the hair is thinner and weaker, it does not have the strength to grow very long.

If the hair is broken, you cannot fix it, but you can maintain and moisturize it. So if you skip maintenance, the cheese will become grumpy again.
