Skin care through the eyes of a beautician

We included a very awesome beautician, Alyona, in the December blog. Let's talk with them about skin care tricks and mistakes. Alyona owns the SunKissed beauty salon in Paide and Tartu. You can get acquainted with the salon here.

She says this about herself: "My name is Alyona. I am a beautician. Despite the fact that I finished my studies already in 2009, I became a real beauty fan a few years ago. For me, the work of a beautician is more than just taking care of the face. It's therapy. This is our health. The skin is the largest human organ and the facial skin is the part that others see the most. The beauty of the skin largely depends on the quality of products, daily beauty rituals and our lifestyle."

What are the biggest skincare mistakes made during the holidays?

Christmas is a very busy time. Also a stressful time for many. Therefore, during the holidays, facial skin care tends to be left behind or even forgotten. And once there is a company Christmas party or a family party, we try to solve everything with a thicker layer of makeup. Which usually doesn't work, because the secret to flawless makeup is well-groomed and healthy skin.

What should you pay special attention to when it comes to skin care during the holidays?

Skin care could be regular. Just like when it comes to diet and exercise, the most important thing is to have a routine, so it is with skin care. Try to develop a personal beauty ritual for yourself. Make it enjoyable for yourself so it doesn't feel like a chore. On weekdays, it could be the "1-2-3" system, i.e. cleansing-toning-moisturizing. Your beauty arsenal could include cleansing face foam, face water, cream. This is such a minimal program that does not require a lot of time and expenses.

One day a week you could organize a small home spa for yourself. In addition to the already familiar products, use a face scrub. In winter, it could definitely be a mild enzyme peeler, as the facial skin is already more sensitive and more damaged due to weather conditions. You could also add a face mask to your spa beauty ritual. It moisturizes the skin, evens out the skin tone. If you have a Christmas party tomorrow, today would be a good day to exfoliate your skin and make a moisturizing mask. Then the make-up will be more even and brighter.

Which procedures or product groups are the best gift for your skin?

In winter, the best gift for your skin is a course of facial treatments. Why do a course of facial treatments? It gives a faster effect and protects your skin from cold weather. Your skin will definitely be grateful if you choose creams with a darker composition. You can use products with spicy scents in body care. They will stimulate your senses and help fight the darkness that surrounds us in winter.

PS! If you use e.g. orange-scented body lotion before going to a Christmas party, it will help create a better Christmas mood.

Which skin care activity is most underrated?

It seems to me that exfoliating the body and also the face is the most underrated. You can often hear that huge amounts of cream are put on the face, but the skin still flakes. Why is it like that? Every 28 days, our skin renews itself, that is, a layer of dead skin cells forms on the skin, and this layer prevents the cream from working as it should. However, if you exfoliate your skin once a week, the situation will improve significantly.

What is the biggest myth in skin care?

The biggest myth is that oily skin doesn't need cream. Oily skin can also suffer from dryness or lack of hydration. Choose products suitable for your facial skin type, which regulate sebum secretion and at the same time deeply moisturize the skin.

Which active ingredient is a "must have"?

Hyaluronic acid and retinol. Hyaluronic acid is responsible for the skin's moisture balance. Hyaluronic acid is a substance inherent in our body. Over time, the capacity of the cells that produce this substance decreases, therefore hyaluronic acid is used as an active ingredient in anti-aging creams and serums.

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. It helps in collagen synthesis. Collagen molecules fill the wrinkle base, making the skin smoother. Retinol also helps make the skin brighter and fresher. When it comes to retinol, remember that it can irritate sensitive skin, so it's worth starting with small amounts. It also makes the skin more sensitive to the sun's rays, so creams containing SPF must be used.

Are skin care products a good gift for yourself and your loved ones?

High-quality skin care products are always a good gift for yourself and your loved ones. Think about which products your loved one does not have, which he has never tried, or which product he is talking about, which he wants to try. Don't forget yourself either. High-quality cosmetics are an investment in yourself.

It often happens that we don't want to waste money on ourselves and some product seems too expensive to us. But think, even if you buy a 60-euro cream, how long will it last? It depends on the product, but definitely for three months, possibly longer. If you divide 60 euros over 180 days (three months), it turns out that you spend 0.33 cents a day for the health of your skin! And now think when you go shopping.
